Studying the flute as a major and the piano as a minor at the University of Taipei does not mean Ryan Limanto has a parochial view of musical possibilities. The BBS alumnus wants to make it clear that a graduate in music is not confined to playing concerts. Read more to find out about this alumni who moved to BBS from Springfield to pursue his musical career in BBS. “Music is not just for performance but also to educate others and to be involved in the applied side of music like managing artists, recital programs and concerts,” said Ryan. And he knows more than a thing or two about performances. PICTURE This former music powerhouse for Bina Bangsa School’s orchestra, under the tutelage of Mr Yandri, was a man with talents not limited to school grounds. Even at a young age, Ryan Limanto was very enthusiastic about music. Ryan played the Saxophone in an orchestra in which he performed for Java Jazz, at the age of just 15. At the age of 17 Ryan became the Principal flutist at the national youth orchestra (IYCO, Indonesia Youth Concert Orchestra) which allowed him to perform in multiple famous stages such as the Aula Simfonia. Additionally, Ryan pemiered works by Ananda Sukarlan in honor of our former president BJ Habibie. The music under-grad was back in his alma mater Bina Bangsa last week giving a sublime and stunning flute recital of 18th century Italian virtuoso Niccolo Paganni’s (aka “The devil’s violinist”) La Caccia and of another Pierre Octave Ferroud piece, both very appreciatively received by students and teachers in the school hall. He also had more than music on his mind when he encouraged students to pursue their dreams of higher studies even as he recounted his own initial setbacks.
“Rejection does not mean the end of the world. Rejection is a common thing we face every single day, it is a stepping stone that would allow us to reach our dreams. Basically, don’t give up. It is a competitive world out there. Keep pursuing your dreams XD.” Being a fellow performer in the BBS Orchestra, I could understand where he was coming from. Ryan’s achievements was not only confined to music. Having 2As and 2A*s on the A levels under his belt, Ryan definitely put a lot of hard work into everything he does. In short he is a force to be reckoned with. -By Marco Gunawan and Mr Joseph
