Avior Games 2018 Opening Ceremony

Written by Jocelyn Japnanto

The Avior Games started off with a bang at the courtyard of Bina Bangsa School KJS on Friday, 14 September 2018. BBS has been holding biennial cups since 2011. Following the success of last year’s Ethereal Cup, the school decided to host a mini-cup to foster sportsmanship and strengthen friendships with fellow schools. Despite featuring only two events; basketball and debate, 23 schools were willing to participate in this year’s inter-school event.

The word “Avior” has been chosen to entitle the event as it is the brightest star in the night sky that belongs in the southern constellation of Carina. The games’ slogan reads “Reach For the Stars”, which is selected to inspire students to dream big and take opportunities in order to prove their abilities and talents.

The opening ceremony, hosted by Christopher Nathanael and Frans Budiman, introduced our students and staff to the participating schools and Avior’s events. After singing Indonesia’s national anthem and BBS’s school song, the school’s principal, Mr Richard addressed the aim of the event and his best wishes for the committee and players. Our hosts then had a short interview with Moira Renata of JC1 Forbes, the Head of the Avior Games committee.

Avior Games 2018 officially began when Mr. Richard scored a basketball into one of the hoops, in replacement of our traditional torch or ribbon. Next the students staged several refreshing dances and performances, which brought a lively energy onto the court. Finally, the ceremony ended with what arguably was the highlight of the event. The whole Avior committee joined in for a unexpected flash mob and danced to Tiësto’s “Jackie Chan”.
