Annually, all the BBS campuses participate in an event called the Friendship Games. This year, the event was held on the 10th-11th of February. BBS KJ sent their soccer boys team, basketball girls team and basketball boys team to the games that ware held in Bandung. This event aims to test the skills of the team players from Semarang, Malang, Bandung, PIK and KJ on various grounds, and most importantly, to gain virtue and sportsmanship. Competition aside, the students also get to make new friends through interactions with students from different branches and even cities. One of our coaches stated that the next friendship games might possibly be held at either Malang or Semarang, with two additional sports included in the category: table tennis and badminton. This year, the BBS KJ team came back with their hands loaded with trophies. The basketball boys team won third place, the basketball girls team won second place and last but not least, the soccer boys team won first place. Overall, with the achievements of the three teams, BBS KJ has won second place among all the other BBS branches. Foremost, BBS KJ is very proud of them and we would like to congratulate all the teams for the victory that they have earned and their efforts in preparing and training for this event.
We have interviewed some of our school team members individually to talk about their experience. To represent our girls basketball team, we have Brenda Widjaja from Sec 4 Crosby. “Winning gave me a sense of joy and satisfaction, and seeing the team’s hard work paid off made me feel extremely proud.
From being part of the team, I gained more friends, and get to communicate with people I usually never speak to. The most memorable event that happened to me was the first time I played with my team members. At first, I was unsure, as I did not want to let the team down. But after I stepped into the court, all the anxiety disappeared and I tried my best to focus on the game and support the the team. As for my advice, anyone can accomplish anything as long as they put their minds into it.
If you are dedicated and hardworking, with enough practice, I’m sure your skills will improve. Teamwork is also another very important value, as you have to willingly cooperate with your team members in order to reach victory. One thing I regretted was being under-confident and nervous in myself, which held me back from playing the best that I could. Though I had more soccer training than basketball, I think that I had gained endurance, which I got to apply during the games. I would undoubtedly join again if I could! The whole experience of togetherness of the team has been really awesome and I won’t want to turn down another chance to bond with the great people I’ve met. “
We also have Ariel Andersen from JC1 Tyndale to represent our basketball boys team. “I feel honored to be chosen to join the team and to participate in the Friendship Games. I made new friends and it was an epic opportunity in my life. I have also improved my strength to greater lengths, and I can say that I have become a better leader. There are things that I have experienced from the event that I can’t find anywhere else, which is why I would partake again in this more than rare chanc
e kind of event. One of the most memorable experience is when the coach told us, ‘Remember who you’re playing for. You are not playing for the name behind your jersey, but for the names in front.’ That moment hit us as we realised that there are more important factors than just individual skills. Most importantly, we must have teamwork. Quoted by a great player, Michael Jordan, ‘Talents win games but teamworks win championships.’ Some advice for others in my point of view is to put your sport as your priority, if possible as your girlfriend! Train by yourselves and if that is where your passion is at, a set of skills and teamwork will come by itself. The most important value to have is dedication and sportsmanship, because no one likes rude players! I wouldn’t say that I regretted anything and even if I did, I wouldn’t change it as people learn from mistakes.”
