After weeks of preparation, learning, researching, writing, editing, and rehearsing, all the EGP students of JC1 conducted a mock NGO campaign to the delegates of MUN on the 7th of February, 2020.
“Thaw with her gentle persuasion is more powerful than Thor with his hammer. The one melts, the other breaks into pieces.” – Henry David Thereau
Ever faced well-intended strangers in the shopping mall asking you to support a cause for a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that you were totally clueless about or don’t have time for?
Well, JC1 students were given that exact challenge to do what these selfless strangers do all the time – to persuade our peers to sign and support our cause.
Easier said than done!
The project started off with the EGP students learning about the power of persuasion and analysing language with the intent to persuade. They looked at sample NGO letters like the British Red Cross and such.
We created our own NGO from scratch. Everything, from logo to slogan and design were a result of our own brainstorm. The theme was matched with MUN: Information Technology in the 21st century and the future.
.
We chose the following problems to address as part of our EGP module for I.T:
- Group 1: Addiction to Technology
- Group 2: Cyberhacking
- Group 3: Cyberbullying
- Group 4: Cryptocurrency
- Group 5: Artificial Intelligence
- Group 6: Fake News
- Group 7: Medicine and Surgery
- Group 8: Space Exploration
- Group 9: Tech Pollution
- Group 10: De-extinction
- Group 11: Designer Babies
- Group 12: Autonomous Cars
The event coincided with day 2 of MUN, so we had a chance to persuade the MUN delegates from other campuses as well. Each group had a signature sheet as proof of work and we also had to find ways to market our NGO and create visibility in order to be seen, so we made stickers to distribute freely.
Awards were given to those who managed to persuade the best, collected the highest number of signatures and so on.
The awards on the day went to the following groups:
- Most Persuasive Appeal Letter: (Group 11: Harvani, Francessco, Nicholas)
- Most Persuasive Graphic Poster: (Group 7: Kelly, Jonathan, jason Richard)
- Most Persuasive Presentation: (Group 11: Harvani, Francessco, Nicholas)
- Highest Number of Signatures: (Group 1: Beth, Alec, Aymer, Carol)
- Most Visible NGO: (Group 1: Beth, Alec, Aymer, Carol)
- Most Creative NGO: (Group 7: Kelly, Jonathan, Jason Richard)
In a nutshell, the day was hectic and challenging as the delegates asked difficult questions, yet we learned so much while having a great time.
