But to begin with, what is the Indonesia Orchestra & Ensemble Festival (or IOEF for short) even? Basically, it’s a 3-day festival where all sorts of musical groups and communities from around Indonesia can perform any type of melody and harmony, from Traditional Angklung performances to interpretations of modern pop, all in front of an audience of fellow musicians and music-aficionados. It is not inherently a competition, but performances are still graded and compared with other groups.
With that in mind, we now can get to the part where our school comes in.
A month before the festival, the music department of BBSKJ were informed that they would be performing on the last day of the IOEF. Quickly scrambling to prepare for the performance, a portion of musicians from both the Western Junior Orchestra and Senior Orchestra were drafted to play.
With hard work and dedicated practices every week (as well as split-second sight-reading), within just a month, the hastily-made BBS Strings Ensemble managed to present to the judges a spectacular repertoire that triumphed over 23 other groups to win Bronze Medals for the music faculty of BBS KJS.
