BBS-KJS Shade Garden

The initial goal of the shade garden is to utilize and convert the vacant space in the school into something productive and beautiful.  Lao Shi-Wen, the main person responsible for the project said, the undertaking aims to activate the students’ interest so they may be involved in the project and feel a sense of ownership. She further said she wants the team members to come up with an idea on how to further develop the garden so they can still claim ownership, feel good about it, and use the garden as a stepping stone to do a little bit more of geographical analysis on weather, and temperature. This will provide the students more opportunities to educate themselves about the different types of plants, and the best weather condition for planting, to name a few.

Ms. Wen said everyone should pay attention to the vacant lot next to the futsal field and basketball court because the garden will be grown at the rear end of the futsal field. “There are two trees there, so the idea again is for the team members to use those trees to provide some form of shade or decide whether we need to add a little bit of roofing and whether that will ruin the appearance of the garden… so we are still leaving it open for ideas and suggestions. Since the whole concept presents certain challenges, in part because only certain plants are able to grow in shady conditions and otherwise there is direct competition for sunlight, the goal now is to clear that plot of land and improve the soil fertility. We need to set the timeline so we will know what to do progressively.” “Definitely, the goal is not to finish it in one term because the time period is too short so we want to start something now, so we can continue the next academic year,” added Mr. Uthaya.

The number of interested members is still growing but the students who joined first are William of Sec 3, Jocelyn, then Shelly. For the teachers, we have Mr. Uthaya, Wen Lao Shi, Ms. Xu Feng, Ms. Yulia and Mr. Winson. Anyone can join. It’s voluntary.

There are four groups: Engineering, Architect, Advertisements and Botanist. Jocelyn, who’s in the Advertisement group, says that Wen Lao Shi, the PIC, keeps calling everyone LA FERNS for some reason. The Engineering group, on the other hand, is the one who decides on the advertisements and to showcase the project on the green board. The Botanists decide which plant to use in the garden.
