Bina Bangsa School: Combining the best of Asian and Western education

Today, there are many options education-wise for your child, and it is easy to be overwhelmed with information. However, there are two leading schools of thought in the realm of international education: Asian and Western education.

Undoubtedly, the two very different approaches to international education yield different results in forming a student’s personality and world perspectives. Before diving into how we approach education here at BBS, let’s look at the two approaches individually.

Differences between Asian and Eastern education

Both systems are not without flaws, as each approach has its positives and negatives that bring about differing characters in students.

In an Asian learning environment, students are more generally known to be hardworking and determined than in other cultures. Students of Asian education also frequently possess a solid moral code that signifies a bigger life than their own. Hence, they tend to perceive their role in relation to their greater community. An example of this is their tendency to view academic success as an opportunity to bring honour to their families, prioritising it over critical thinking skills.

On the other hand, Western education is more known for encouraging students to challenge ideas presented to them, which aligns with the more individualistic nature of Western culture compared to their Eastern counterparts. While more students of Western education do become better critical thinkers in nature, it is also possible that this approach hinders students’ growth in their dedication and perseverance.

BBS approach to education

At BBS, we believe that our responsibility is to create a learning environment that is conducive to students achieving their full potential.

Our education model revolves around the idea of fusing the positives of the two approaches to encourage our students to be critical thinkers with a strong sense of character that will become active members of society in the future.

Curriculum-wise, we offer Cambridge programmes for all levels, ranging from Primary School up to Junior College. The Cambridge programme is a world-renowned curriculum that is internationally recognised by top universities worldwide. Students are encouraged to be critical thinkers and formulate their own opinions on issues in their learning. At the same time, progress is evaluated through standardised testing at different stages of their education.

Beginning with our primary school program, BBS started the Young Investigators (YI) initiative, which is a learning experience that seeks to give students the chance to integrate their knowledge from different areas of learning and apply them in real-life situations. This program allows them the courage to answer tough challenges while developing critical and creative thinking skills.

At the same time, the influence of our Chinese heritage runs deep in our philosophy of teaching in the way that creating a strong sense of character amongst our students is also a priority. Through co-curricular activities (CCAs) and social work opportunities, students are taught to perform their best through hard work and determination and look outwards and reflect on how they could positively affect the communities around them.
