Better technology should not only have its usage controlled but also have its user educated.

Moving Forward

E-learning is slowly transforming the landscape of learning and development in BBS-KJ. When compared to the traditional mode of classroom learning, there is clear evidence the e-learning program can also be used to supplement the weaknesses or replace the loss of this school’s current curriculum during times when days are lost due to unforeseen circumstances (like elections or floods). The idea is simple and straightforward. Teachers can still teach by putting the needed work and resources on the website. Then the students can immediately log in at a certain time to do what’s required.

It’s a pilot project, a trial, but so far the login response has been a good sign. During the February 15 election about 85-90% of students logged in at eight o’clock in the morning to work on their tasks and submitted their work at the designated time. It is a positive sign for all of us knowing the students have responded to it very well. We are still compiling data and receiving feedback from the students, still doing the survey, because the follow-up on this e-learning project is crucial.

We have also formed a task force – a sort of commando task force – comprised of teachers from various departments to drive the e-learning forward, to fix it and manage it, and to figure out how to better incorporate it in the curriculum. I have even spoken to the Academic Supervision Division about this, and to other principals as well.

So yes, I guess we are really moving forward – so much so that next year we can probably lift the hand-phone ban. There are what, five or six campuses so who will be the first to lift the ban? Hopefully ours! To me it will be a step moving forward. To strive for a better curriculum, better technology should not only have its usage controlled but also have its user educated.

So if next year we can lift the ban, we will also solve the online access problem.

In addition, we are designing hand-phone apps for students and parents to download, so students can all receive their notifications and gain long-term retention of information.

There’s so much in store for everyone so we all have to keep moving forward.
