Road to the final:

Debate is one of the academic activities that give students creative room to express their emotions. The knowledge that they gain through this is simply remarkable.

The contestants were finalists of a series of debate competition rounds that started with 36 English General Paper students and 6 different motions, all related to discrimination. It included ageism, religious discrimination, racial discrimination, discrimination against the handicapped, and discrimination against inmates. After the initial group stages involving all EGP students, 8 groups progressed to the knockout stages of the quarterfinals.

Both the teams exhibited great oratorical skills. They put in tremendous hard work to showcase their talent. The debaters displayed confidence  in presenting their arguments before the audience and a panel of eminent adjudicators Ms Martha, Mr TJ, and Mr Richard. The chairwoman and chairman presiding over the final were Carol Ann of JC1 Forbes and Amyric of JC1 Mendel.

After the intense and heated 30-minute debate, the adjudicators ultimately announced the winners of the competition. The results ended with the Government team as the runner-up and the Opposition Team as the winners. The best speaker title was awarded to Nicola from the Government team.

Regardless of who took the honours, both teams ended the day with a feeling of satisfaction knowing that each and every one of them performed remarkably on this day.

“For good ideas and true innovation, you need human interaction, conflict, argument, and debate.” – Margaret Heffernan.
