Issues in Modern Society: S3 Taylor

By: Alexandra Louis Tan S3T

For eight months, the students of Secondary 3 Taylor have been working on an ambitious project to explore and investigate the issues influencing modern society. In addition to gaining a deep, analytical understanding of these problems, the class aimed to present their significance to a wider audience.

The goal of this project was to encourage students to develop a variety of skills: critical thinking, research, analysis, presentation, and communication. Throughout these past months, students have had the opportunity to engage with topics that affect them personally in a local and global community context. A chance to expand their worldview. A window into the state of the world outside the classroom.

The project was designed to be highly personalised, allowing each student to explore an area they are genuinely interested in. Students started by identifying topics they were especially drawn to—from eye health to the death penalty—and chose a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) that aligned with their interests. They were also given the freedom and opportunity to decide how best to present their findings, thus tailoring their final product to suit their individual strengths—whether that may be in writing, design, or digital media.

Following their topic selection, students planned and conducted surface research to build a foundational understanding of their issue. Then, they designed a survey according to their topic and distributed it to their own chosen respondents. By combining these survey results with information gathered from academic articles and credible websites, students developed well-rounded perspectives on their topics.

Finally, they translated their research into a variety of formats, including research papers, posters, and websites. A full collection of their work can be accessed through this shared Google Drive : S3T – Issues in Modern Society Project
