My first experience with the West North Jakarta Community Choir (WNJCC) was back in 2015, when Mr Yandri invited our then Primary 6 class to accompany the Choir as WNJCC’s friends. It was a new and refreshing experience for me as I saw how things worked behind the scenes before the actual concert. This led me to joining WNJCC in my first year of secondary school because it seemed interesting and rewarding. I was right – joining the Choir was one of the best decisions I ever made.
The Choir helped me meet new people, overcome stage fright and also react quickly to mistakes. I began to form an attachment to the Choir with a sense of duty and responsibility. The Choir became an actual community – an aggregation of different students coming together to create something for everyone to enjoy and grow. This was seen during the Annual Sing Concerts, Christmas Concerts and school public concerts, with a couple competitions in between.
One thing I especially liked was how the Choir focused on the bonding aspect as much as the choral aspect. The roller-coaster journey was never too stressful as you were with your friends and you were learning how to perform properly, gaining new techniques and learning from one another to make the concerts successful. Being in WNJCC taught us how to both focus and enjoy ourselves, to concentrate but not be too tense. I would highly recommend the choir to those who want to try something new and be part of a wonderful community.
